2009 YORK FEDERAL FELLOWS

Ms. Jennifer Englerth, Family First Health
Jennifer will participate in a Spanish language immersion program in South America specifically designed for medical professionals. "This will allow me to see firsthand the medical delivery system that so many Family First Health patients and staff experienced in their country of origin," says Jennifer. She will also join Boston College's nine-month long "learning community," which will focus on the study of diversity and its implications on health care delivery and staffing.

Mr. Ivan "Ike" Hileman, Bell Socialization Services
Ike plans to attend The Creative Writers Workshop in Ireland in order to "learn how to better attract the reader's attention and bolster creative thinking." While overseas, Ike will visit Ireland and England to learn more about their human services systems as they relate to mental health. His plan is to use his new writing skills to "write about issues and the need for changes and improvements in the mental system in York County and in Pennsylvania."

Ms. Carol Kauffman, Crispus Attucks Association
Carol will attend the Disney Institute course in Leadership Excellence. "It is an exciting way to learn leadership techniques that have been successfully implemented by one of the world's most well-known companies," Carol told the Community Foundation. While in California, Carol will visit the Adobe Corporation, which is the only U.S. company to have 3 platinum rated LEED buildings. Carol is very supportive of the GREEN movement, and will help Crispus Attucks in its quest to construct a LEED Platinum building.

Ms. Joan Krechmer, Jewish Family Services of York
Joan plans to attend the premier aging conference in the U.S. sponsored by the National Council of Aging and the American Society on Aging. "The strength of our community lies in tapping into each individual's desire for a sense of belonging and connectedness," Joan says. In addition, Joan will attend the Sundance Film Festival, where she hopes "to be inspired by the medium of film that helps re-shape one's lens of the world in a meaningful and impactful way."

Ms. Penny Myers, York Area Development Corp.
Penny will attend the National Development Council conference in Philadelphia, which provides economic and housing development finance training. Penny will also visit outstanding nonprofit housing development corporations in the U.S. that are leaders in the field. In addition, Penny will participate in Green Mountain at Fox Run's life changing program for women, located in scenic Vermont. Penny views her Fellowship plan as a vehicle to help York Area Development Corporation to "once again become a developer of affordable housing."

Ms. Laurie Anne Spagnola, Children's Home of York
Laurie Anne will attend the annual conference "Alliance Executive Leadership Conference" in Boulder, CO, that focuses on leadership development and networking. Laurie Anne will also embark on a self-made Rocky Mountain outdoor experience, including gut wrenching mountain bike rides, white knuckled white water rafting, fly fishing, and spa treatments, which will test her skills in new learning environments.
