A permanent endowment of York County Community Foundation, the Albert S. Weyer Community Health Fund is a source of charitable support for the health needs of low-income residents of the City of York. With remarkable forward thinking, Mr. Weyer set up a trust valued at approximately $80,000 in 1906. After 100 years, the trust was to be paid to the City to create a hospital to serve the low-income of York, or provide income to hospitals already in operation. In the 1980s and '90s, the City petitioned the courts to allow some modifications to the trust. The endowment, valued at just over $3 million, was created in May 2004 after a final court decision to terminate the trust early because many parties felt the charitable purpose for which the trust had been created had become difficult to fulfill.
A committee of respected medical and civic leaders has been appointed to lead the Endowment. A portion of the fund income will be distributed yearly to directly benefit the Health Bureau of the City of York.
