Hanover, Pennsylvania may bear its distinction for being "the snack food capital," and home to some of the country's finest race horses, shoes, and major battles of the Civil War. Now, with the cooperation of Hanover area nonprofit organizations and York County Community Foundation, Hanover will be known for something else; its efforts in philanthropy.

Last fall, York County Community Foundation challenged Hanover area nonprofit agencies to take part in the Greater Hanover Endowment Building Initiative. Congratulations to the seven nonprofit agencies have stepped forward to begin building a community-based endowment in partnership with the Community Foundation. They are:

Adams Hanover Counseling Services

Emmanuel United Church of Christ

Eichelberger Performing Arts Center

York County Literacy Council- Hanover

Hanover Historical Society

Hanover YMCA

Hanover Hospital

The Community Foundation will provide grants of $12,500 each - a total investment of $87,500 to these organizations, so long as they establish an endowment fund with the Community Foundation before September 1, 2007. The organization's own investment and the matching funds will be used to establish a new $25,000 endowment fund at the Foundation to benefit each of the Hanover area organizations.

"Giving back in Hanover is important to us; we can think of no better way to promote capacity building for the nonprofit community than to encourage endowment building. We hope this Hanover Initiative inspires conversation and commitment," shared Linda McKonly, co-chair for the Greater Hanover Endowment Initiative.
