Mission and History

Our Mission

We create a vibrant York County by engaging donors, providing community leadership, and investing in high-impact initiatives while building endowment for future generations.

Our Vision

York County is a growing, prosperous and united community with unsurpassed opportunities for everyone to thrive.

Our History

York County Community Foundation was founded in 1961 as a way to forever benefit our nonprofit community through endowment. It wasn't until 1991 that the Community Foundation made a real push to build its assets so that it could become the kind of leading organization it is today. Donors are the crux of our existence; they are the reason we have been so successful over the years. Today, thanks to encouragement from many community leaders, we have enhanced our focus to also include being more of a community leader and changemaker by working with our donors to build our Fund for York County, our most flexible discretionary fund.

In 1961, the Community Foundation awarded 7 grants of $100 each to area nonprofits. Today our annual grantmaking has reached nearly $4.5 million. The Community Foundation grew rapidly beginning in 1991, when we set a goal of $5 million in endowment. The goal was reached in 1995, and since then, we have achieved assets of $135 million.

The following donors contributed leadership gifts through two initiatives designed to preserve the future of the Community Foundation. Through our Revitalization and Growth Initiatives, we raised nearly $3 million to support operations. We thank our Founders and Sustainers for their support.
