| 12/12/2011 | In Memoriam: Eugene Struckhoff | |
On December 10, 2011, the Community Foundation, and the nation, lost one of its most important advocates. Eugene "Struck" Struckhoff was Executive Director of Development and Senior Consultant for York County Community Foundation from 1992 - 2000. Struck's role in the creation of 140 community foundations, beginning with the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and ending with York County Community Foundation, inspired his nickname "The Johnny Appleseed of Community Foundations." Struck's legacy is far-reaching and undeniably great. He helped craft York County Community Foundation's Revitalization Initiative in 1992, which quickly brought the Foundation to $5 million in assets by 1995. Struck was also passionate about Dollars for Scholars, a scholarship program he helped found and then bring to York County. Struck was an author, a leader, and an inspiration, not only in York, but in Baltimore, D.C., and many other places where he led and helped build community foundations. York County Community Foundation was Struck's last stop on his community foundation journey, and we would not be where we are today without Struck's hard work, dedication, and innovative ideas. He inspired us all and will be sorely missed. Struck's wife, Norma, and his family have asked that memorial contributions be directed to York County Community Foundation or to the Baltimore Community Foundation. Donations to York County Community Foundation will be directed toward the Eugene C. Struckhoff Fund in support of the Fund for York County. Thank you, Struck - we will miss you! |

| 10/17/2011 | Embracing Aging Event Great Success! | |
Thank you to those who attended our Embracing Aging: A Commnunity Conversation with Dr. Ruth Garrett this morning! Growing older impacts all of us as individuals, families, and as a community. Dr. Ruth Garrett, author and lecturer on issues of aging, addressed a crowd of about 120 at York College to dispel common myths of aging. Dr. Garrett stressed the importance of keeping the brain active as we age, as research has shown that those who simply go along for the ride tend to age faster than those who continue learning, pursue their passions, and engage with others. Dr. Garrett also provided examples of communities who have come together to help elders age well. Also included in the program was a panel of local residents who spoke about their experiences of aging well. Described as role models, panelists included: Lousie Parker, age 81; Elmer Hull, age 85; Jackie Sandblade, age 71; Eric Sandblade, age 68; and Olive Padden, age 81. The program was sponsored by the Community Foundation's Hahn Home Fund for Women and York College. Stay tuned for more educational events from the Hahn Home Fund for Women. |

| 01/19/2011 | Our Beginnings | |
This year marks the 50th anniversary of York County Community Foundation. We thought we would start the year off by sharing an image of our humble beginnings when Beauchamp E. Smith, our founder and first president, signed the papers that brought the Community Foundation (then known as the York Foundation) to life in December, 1961. The Gazette and Daily reported, “The formation of the York foundation, an organization which ‘has for its goal the community’s improvement through independent management of all types of gifts,’ was announced yesterday.” At the time, there were more than 150 community foundations nationwide; now there are more than 700! Pictured in the photo are (l-r): attorney Martin B. Ebbert, secretary; Beauchamp E. Smith, founder; and Ben Lavetan, vice president. Photo courtesy of The Gazette and Daily. |

By now we have all heard of the terrible earthquake that has devastated Haiti. Much of the country's infrastructure has been destroyed, which means that basic human needs - food, water, shelter - cannot be fulfilled. Early estimates indicate that up to one-third of Haiti's 9 million residents have been impacted in some way. As many as 100,000 people have died and thousands have been injured. If you are a Community Foundation donor advisor and want to help the people of Haiti, please call us at 717.848.3733 or go directly though one of the relief organizations below. | 12/16/2009 | End Your Year on a "Giving" Note | |
|
At this time of year, our thoughts often turn to the richness of our relationships with family and friends as we plan for the holiday season. For many of us, it is also a time to plan our year-end charitable contributions in order to take advantage of tax deductions for 2009.
As you contemplate your year-end contributions, please consider adding to the funds you have established at the Community Foundation or starting a new fund to fulfill your philanthropic passions. In addition, a contribution either from your Donor Advised Fund or done directly to the Community Foundation's Fund for York County would enable our Board to make grants that would have the highest possible impact right here in our own community.
To end your year on a giving note, call the Community Foundation at 717.848.3733 before December 31st and turn your passion into reality. |

The start of the giving season just happens to coincide with Community Foundation Week, which is being celebrated this week around the country. If you're wondering why we need a Community Foundation Week, consider this: last year community foundations gave back an estimated $4.1 billion to their local communities. York County Community Foundation granted nearly $2.4 million back into our community through our local nonprofit organizations. We are one of more than 700 community foundations nationwide, and among a growing number spreading around the world, even in Africa. If you want to create a vibrant York County, give us a call!
